A House by the sea

Further Afield

Take the train to Exeter to see the dramatic coastline and avoid parking problems in the city. The city has a cathedral, with the longest unbroken Gothic ceiling vault in the world, situated in an attractive Close. Also here is the coffee house which Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh visited.  You can walk down Parliament Street, said to be the narrowest street in the world (1220mm wide), see the historic quayside with warehouses dating from the time of Charles ll, the Customs House and walk through the underground passages of medieval subterranean aqueducts. There is also a museum, the remains of Roman walls and the 15c Turk’s Head Inn.

About 7 miles south of Teignmouth is the much larger and busier resort of Torquay. There you can visit Kent’s Cave where some of the earliest evidence of man and his coexistence with animals was found. Newton Abbot with its racecourse is about 5 miles away to the west.

Beautiful Dartmoor is about an hour’s drive away and there are many other places to visit  - Babbacombe Model Village (7 miles),  South Devon Steam Railway (16 miles), Lutyens’ Castle Drogo (23 miles), Paignton Zoo (13 miles), Pennywell Farm and Wildlife Centre (18 miles), The River Dart Country Park (16 miles) and Buckfast Abbey(17 miles) - just to mention a few.
